Tradewind Subs - Substitute Teacher

Employees Covered: Substitute Teachers

Pay: starting daily rate is $200 - $220

Schedule: On call Part time, Full time as needed per school needs

Primary Purpose

Tradewind Subs staff provide temporary instructional and support services to K-12 schools, filling in when a school's regular staff is absent or when additional support is required to meet classroom, behavioural, or compliance needs. Staff are employed by Tradewind Subs and placed at client schools throughout Los Angeles County.

Essential Duties

Classroom Instruction & Supervision

  • Deliver pre-planned or self-developed lesson plans aligned to grade level and subject standards.
  • Supervise students during instructional time, recess, lunch, and transitions.
  • Manage classroom behavior using school-approved strategies and positive reinforcement.

Student Support & Accommodations

  • Provide one-on-one or small group academic support.
  • Assist students with disabilities or behavioral needs in accordance with IEPs or school plans.
  • Support English language learners and other specialized student populations.

Safety & Compliance

  • Monitor student safety on campus, including playground and arrival/dismissal duties.
  • Comply with all mandated reporting obligations under California Penal Code (see Mandated Reporter section below).
  • Follow school emergency procedures and all applicable district/charter policies.
  • Maintain confidentiality and adhere to FERPA and child-safety laws.

Administrative & Communication Tasks

  • Take attendance and submit reports to school administration.
  • Communicate student progress or concerns to designated school staff.
  • Complete timesheets, incident reports, and other school-required documentation.

  • Ability to bend, stand, walk, and move around a classroom or campus for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift or assist students, materials, or equipment weighing up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to supervise and respond quickly to student needs in outdoor or high-activity environments.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Pre-Employment Requirements

All candidates must satisfy the following requirements before placement at any school site:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required.
  • DOJ/FBI Livescan Fingerprint Clearance (required under California Education Code §44237).
  • Tuberculosis (TB) risk assessment or test (required under California Education Code §49406).
  • Valid work authorization / I-9 documentation.
  • Verification of applicable credentials, permits, or certifications (e.g., 30-Day Substitute Teaching Permit, NPA certification for Behavioral Interventionists, or equivalent).
  • Minimum of six (6) months of recent experience working with children or adolescents in an educational, childcare, coaching, mentoring, tutoring, or youth development setting.
